It is often said that the only constant in life is change. Alexander Technique teachers are, by their very nature, agents of change. We readily help individuals design and implement life-shaping changes, ranging from simple postural changes to more complex perceptual changes. But change does not only come from within. Most change is driven by developments from outside. Such environmental changes arise from a wide range of factors including the seemingly endless publication of research into human functioning.
So who changes the change agent? How should Alexander Technique teachers respond to the publications in the many areas effecting our work? FM readily used the emerging data of his time. Do we, and how? Are we as a body, keeping current with developments in the rapidly expanding fields of knowledge of human functioning and performance? Or is it being left up to the individual teacher to do so? Are we being left behind by others who readily assimilate new knowledge into their practice?
