Kathleen Ballard initially trained as a schoolteacher, later as research scientist and became an AT teacher in 1984. Her questioning scientific approach has been applied to our training, teaching and professional practice. She is a core member of the STAT Research Group and author of a recent article on the ideomotor phenomenon and the AT.
Formerly a member of several STAT study groups, Kathleen worked on descriptions of teacher competences and later played a key role on behalf of STAT in the development of National Occupational Standards for Alexander Technique teaching in the UK. These underpin the curriculum submitted to the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council and help establish AT teaching on a more professional footing. Kathleen also served on the Voluntary Self Regulation Group that developed guidelines for teacher self regulation.
